How to Make PlayDough?

Playdough, aka Play-doh, is a fun activity for children of all ages. Did you know you can DIY custom made playdough for your child? Create unique colours and fragrances using this quick and simple non-toxic recipe. Here’s how:

DIY PlayDough – Classic Method

The classic method of making playdough involves cooking on the stovetop. A lot of people prefer this method because it creates a better texture. If you are willing to prepare it yourself, perform the following steps.

Step 1 – Get the Ingredients

For the preparation of the playdough, you will only need a few ingredients:

  • 2 cups of flour

  • 1 cup of salt

  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

  • 2 cups of warm water

  • Food coloring of your choice (add it in step 3)

  • 1 Tablespoon cream of tartar to improve elasticity (optional)

Step 2 – Create And Heat the Mixture

Once you mix the ingredients (without the food coloring), place the mixture on the stovetop and stir over low heat. You should keep stirring until the mixture thickens and is no longer sticky. The texture should resemble mashed potatoes. When you reach this goal, remove the pan from heat and let it cool.

An alternative is baking the mixture in the oven. This way, you will be able to make figures and ornaments, which can be then painted.

Step 3 – Shape and Color

When the mixture cools, knead it to reach a silky-smooth texture. Then, divide it into several pieces. To color it, place the color at the center of the piece or ball. Next, keep folding the endings of the piece toward the color until it’s evened out. You can add more color if necessary. Additionally, you can use gloves or plastic bags to keep your hands clean.

Step 4 – Ready for Use

Finally, the playdough is ready for use. Your children can play with it straight away as it’s completely safe to do so.

Step 5 – Store the PlayDough

When you have finished playing, you can store it in a sealed container.

If the mixture dries out, you can always add water to make it softer. However, if it’s dried past a certain point, you will not be able to make it useable again. Hence, you will have to repeat the DIY process. If the mixture becomes too soft or sticky you will need to heat the mixture once again.

After all, the process of making playdough is extremely simple. It can be a great way to spend time with your child and save money on toys.
