What Are CVC Words – Benefits & Best Ways to Teach Them.

As a parent or an adult, you want to help your child become a successful reader. However, this is a skill that builds gradually and typically takes some time. Once the child learns the individual letters and builds a strong phonemic awareness, they are ready to apply the knowledge and combine letters into words. The easiest way to do this is to begin with CVC words.

What are CVC words?

A CVC is a three-letter word that consists of a consonant, vowel, and consonant sound. These words don’t include any tricky blends or diphthongs. For example, bed, hot, rug, cat, tip, dad, van, etc. That’s why CVC words are the first step toward becoming a great reader.

The Importance of CVC Words

The purpose of CVC words is for the student to blend the letters and say a whole word, instead of three separate letters. In the beginning, children may read these words out of context. But, they must understand the concept of wording. More specifically, each word has a beginning, middle, and an end, and together they form a word with meaning. As they gain confidence with CVC words, children may use them in sentences and texts.

Activities for CVC Words

Some early readers have no problems in learning these words. However, some children struggle to combine letters and form meaningful words. Reading fluently always requires a lot of practice. So, as a guardian or an educator, you should always provide the child with numerous opportunities to practice CVC words. Here are 9 activities you can try with your child.

  • Build CVC words with magnetic letters – opens the countless possibility for word formation

  • Use CVC Flash Cards – sort, match, order, and discover. You can use the flashcards for playing games, such as missing cards, Q&A, or races

  • Play CVC Games such as CVC Tic-Tac-Toe

  • Make a distinction between real CVC words from nonsense (using a table)

  • Build several CVC words from another given word (using the same letters)

  • Change one letter in the CVC word to form a word with another meaning

  • Make words then break down words – the student needs to realize that each letter is making a sound, or forming the word

  • Sort the CVC words by the beginning letter, the ending sound, or the vowel

  • Make simple sentences with CVC words

Learning to read can be stressful for both the child and the adult. So, it is always important to stay patient and try out different, fun methods for education.
